[new]: Washed Out – Call It Off

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 08:36 PM PDT

“Call It Off” is the b-side to Washed Out’s upcoming “Amor Fati” single. It will be released on November 7th via Weird World Record Co. It was originally a part of the iTunes release of Within And Without.

It’s more of the same chilled out dreaminess that Washed Out has been easing us with. It obviously would’ve fit right in on the album.

Have a listen below:

[mixtape]: A$AP Rocky – LIVELOVEA$AP

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 08:29 PM PDT

My first taste of A$AP Rocky was during his set at Fader Fort during CMJ. I wasn’t completely blown away, but I definitely couldn’t ignore the guy. Something about him kept my attention, and I’m starting to see that my hunch was correct.

A$AP Rocky just signed a huge deal with Sony/RCA’s Polo Grounds Music for an insane $3 million. So you could say that my expectations are pretty high. Last Friday I heard his song “Bass” and although I didn’t love it at first, the song grew on me over the weekend, large in part to Clams Casino’s incredible production.

Today he dropped his debut mixtape LIVELOVEA$AP as a Halloween treat. I’ve yet to dig in, but if the songs are up to par with “Bass”, it should be a pretty good listen. Not sure if it will be a $3 million listen, but that’s not for us to decide.

Stream “Trill” and grab the whole mixtape for free download below:

Leisure’s “Green Light” is a song that continues to sound better and better with every new listen. The music video only adds to my growing fondness of the song. It’s a perfect fit. The song is going to be released as a (300) limited 7″ vinyl via Crash Symbols.

Watch the clip below, which was premiered by yvynyl and No Fear Of Pop.  There’s also a mp3 ready for download.

[watch]: Passion Pit Play New Songs

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 03:57 PM PDT

Moogfest, the North Carolina music festival took place this weekend. Passion Pit took the opportunity to play two new songs live, one of which is (apparently) called “American Blood”. The videos and sound aren’t the best quality, but it’s still new Passion Pit. The 2nd clip sounds promising. I’m going to assume these songs will be on their 2nd LP.

Hopefully better clips will surface, but watch these videos in the meantime:

I’m seeing them on Saturday at Cornell University. Going to be a good one.

[Band To Watch]: Friends

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 03:10 PM PDT

Brooklyn-based band Friends have caught my attention with their new single “I’m His Girl”. It’s a bit of indie funk, with an attitude. Friends give you that and more on the single which is infectious to the bone. It’s the type of music that won’t leave your head. Next thing you know, everyone will be asking you what exactly your bumping, and you can proudly tell them it’s Friends. This band just gives off this feeling of “cool” that makes it easy to see why they are so likeable.

The “I’m His Girl” 7″ single is released tomorrow, but you can stream it below (Stream b-side “My Boo” over at the bands site:

Here’s “Friend Crush” a single that they released earlier in the year:

[Band To Watch]: Coastal Cities

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 01:48 PM PDT

Coastal Cities are a group of friends from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. At only 17 years old, these young lads have put together an EP called Think Tank that is going to get you moving. Think a mix of Two Door Cinema Club and Foals. Jangly guitars hit hard with dance aspirations create a highly enjoyable sound.

The title track, which rightfully leads off the EP is one to rave about for sure. Wide-winged guitars ride the boundaries of dancerock all while sounding big and awe inspiring. It’s feel good music in it’s finest form, and I can’t get enough. These guys are young, but already have a solid foundation that surely makes them a band to keep an eager eye on.

Below listen to a stream of “Think Tank”:

If you like what you hear, head to their soundcloud page and check out the rest of their tunes. The EP will be released on December 5 via Once Upon A Time Records.

Dancing in Graveyards with Charli XCX

Charli XCX Dancing in Graveyards with Charli XCX

Though only 19 years old, Charli XCX has making a name for herself in the British pop circle for years now.

After rising to underground fame as a Londontown club kid and unleashing a smattering of songs to the Internetz, the young electro-pop singer has opened for several high-profile acts, including Robyn and Peaches.

As a result, she’s made several small-but-significant splashes in the mainstream press already, including an introduction in The Guardian back in 2008 (cleverly dubbing her “The Fisher Price Fischerspooner“), a profile in Dazed Digital, and a feature within an Interview Magazine article in 2009 spotlighting the rising “Brit Pop Girls” of the time, including Little Boots and La Roux. And while her own launch has been delayed far longer than the other girls highlighted within the group, hers may be the most promising and intriguing yet.

Earlier this year, Charli unleashed the unbelievably killer “Stay Away”–a jagged warning shot fired against grinding, gritty synthesizers that easily ranks amongst my favorite singles of 2011. “Do you remember what I said the first time that we met? Stay away,” she desperately pleads above the demented beat, crafted by American producer Ariel Rechtshaid. It’s gorgeous and haunting; the kind of song that simply can’t be played enough, and a dark, sexy slice of what both reviewers and she herself have lovingly dubbed “Goth-pop.”

Now the teenage chanteuse returns with a new song for the end of November: “Nuclear Seasons.” The song, which is available for free on her official website, plays like a darker take on the slick ’80′s revivalist pop sheen of Gwen Stefani‘s solo career (though I’m hearing a bit of No Doubt‘s “It’s My Life” in the verses as well), added to Marina + The Diamonds‘ damning, dramatic vibrato. “You taste the blast and it shook your bones,” she cooly croons as she ruminates on an explosive relationship on the rocks. Don’t drop bombs, baby!

Along with some of the aforementioned artists, she’s also giving me some serious Sky Ferreira vibes: She’s young, free-spirited, mysterious and fiercely rebellious (never too afraid to toe the line between outspoken and all-out bitchy, as her thoughts on Gaga and La Roux may attest). And like Ferreira, she’s responsible for more than a few pop ditties that utterly slay everything else playing on the radio today.

In short, I’m a big fan of Charli XCX.

Though there’s still not too many tunes floating around by the young London-bred singer just yet, she’s quickly become one of my latest obsessions–and certainly one of my most anticipated acts for 2012. Watch for her debut to hit in 2012, which features more production by Rechtshaid, as well as “Dancing On My Own” producer Patrik Berger, and Teddybears member (and older brother to fellow Robyn hit maker, Klas Åhlund), Joakim Åhlund.

(Oh, yeah–and the XCX stands for “Kiss Charli Kiss,” which the singer herself calls “unbelievably crap.”)

“Stay Away” was released on May 15. (iTunes UK)

Blondfire “Where The Kids Are”

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 08:12 PM PDT

Because no music blog post centered on a new act can be written without there being some kind of “They sound like…” reference, let’s just get it out the way now: Listening to “Where The Kids Are”, the new single from sibling duo Blondfire (brother/ sister Bruce & Erica Driscoll), some of the names that will likely float around your head will be MGMT, Foster The People, Robyn and/ or The Cardigans. Watching the facepaint-fancying video found below, you might also assume they hang with Ke$ha.

That part of this piece now done, “Kids” is also quite the indie-flavored sonic treat, the sharp crispness of those drums matched with the mammoth guitar interjections and strange little whistle-synth chirps mustering up a widescreen epic feel that sounds like heaven through headphones.

Toss in the tiny, ethereal coos of Erica demanding all to not lose sight of their youthfulness in the middle of all the anthemic noize for a nice little soft/ loud juxtaposition, and it becomes very difficult not seeing this tune (and the band) blowing up something major in the coming months.

Single drops digitally November 1st.

Wale “Slight Work” featuring Big Sean/ “White Linen (Coolin’)” featuring Ne-Yo

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 09:27 AM PDT

Want to prove that signing to a label powered mostly by coke-rap machismo hasn’t completely put a crimp on your non-gangsta, alt-leaning sensibilities, and be able to produce a street/ club banger that both caters to your left-field mindset and proves to your new backing that being added the odd-man out on their roster was commercially worthwhile?

Simple, hook up with someone like Diplo for an instantly stand-out beat that quirkily snaps, crackles and pops like the best ’90′s Busta Rhymes cuts and/ or ’00′s-era Missy Elliott jams and fill it with enough lyrical punchlines to keep heads satisfied.

Which is precisely what Wale has done on “Slight Work”, an unmistakable highlight from sophomore effort Ambition in which he and featured guest Big Sean basically have a ball atop a minimalist playground of a beat made up of nothing but sirens, sampled-voice “Work it”‘s and other Looney Tunes sound effects, littering the animated frame with one-liners galore (“A million home sellers couldn’t find a realer state”; “Bitch you ain’t a boss ’til you cut a fuckin’ paycheck/ Only thing between me and your bitch is a latex”).

Wale – “Slight Work” feat. Big Sean (Prod. by Diplo) by RalphFolarin

Meanwhile, obvious future single “White Linen (Coolin’)” satisfies the requisite that all MMG albums come equipped with a lushed-out R&B number in which rappers get their rocks off playing out the rap star fantasy of being big ballin’ bad chick-magnets.

Here, as the ever-suave Ne-Yo boasts of being a “large” and “in charge” “boss” with nary a blemish found in his finely-pressed croon, and the backing track lays a drum machine-splattered seduction swirl reminiscent of the finest in ’80′s soul, Wale spends his days “tryna find life’s meaning up in this Patron” all the while banging any dime he comes across in the hopes that one of them ends up being “a keeper”.

[new]: Chairlift – Sidewalk Safari

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 08:42 PM PDT

“Sidewalk Safari” is the latest track from Chairlift’s upcoming new LP, Something, out 1/24/2012. Eccentricities are made accessible by Chairlift’s unusual sound. It’s as funky as pop can get, and you love them for it. It sounds like a tranquil dream that you’re not quite ready to leave.

Take a listen:

[new]: Keep Shelly In Athens – DIY

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 03:55 PM PDT

On November 5 Keep Shelly In Athens are dropping a new EP titled, Our Own Dream. “DIY” is a wonderfully sultry cut tilted with mysterious energy that’s nearly paralyzing.

The EP will be released by the consistently brilliant Forest Family Records. As always it’s a limited run, and you should probably pre-order it before it sells out. They’re on white & silver vinyl in a very limited fashion of 500 (250 each color).

“Lazy Noon”, another song from the EP, is available to stream/download along with “DIY” below:

Snow Patrol – Mysterious Ways (U2 Cover)

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 03:20 PM PDT

In honor of the 20th anniversary of U2′s famed album Achtung Baby, Q Magazine has put together a cover album titled AHK-toong BAY-bi. The album will come with the December issue of the magazine.

Below you can catch Snow Patrol’s version of “Mysterious Ways”. It’s one of U2′s biggest songs, and I think Snow Patrol do a pretty good job of staying true to the original. It’s more of a homage than a recreation.

Craig Finn Announces Solo Single

Big fan of Mr. Finn. All fans of The Hold Steady have a good reason to be excited for 2012.

Fanzine – Roman Holiday

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 02:15 PM PDT

Fanzine’s new single “Roman Holiday” is rolling deep in some cool-slacker 90s influences. Mean guitar riffs go hand and hand with the easy going vocals. This is a super cool track that sounds perfect on your recovery day Sunday.

“Roman Holiday” will be released as a limited 7″ that Fat Possum will release on November 22nd.

You Won’t – Who Knew

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 01:23 PM PDT

Less is more lately. This is a lesson I stand by in general, and often when it comes to my music. In a culture that is so obsessed with such busy sounding music, You Won’t are a band that do what comes natural to them, and are all the better for it. Josh Arnoudse and Raky Sastri compose of the Boston duo, and they are two names you should get to know.

“Who Knew” is perfect example of their stylings. Romantic delivery of light folk pop seem to come so easy for these two. “Who Knew” is smart, clean, and as feel good as they come. Sweet and sincere, I don’t see where you’d have a problem with listening to these guys.

It’s from their album, Skeptic Goodbye, available to purchase here.

LIPS – Everything To Me (Adventure Club Dubstep Remix)

Posted: 29 Oct 2011 12:59 PM PDT

No need for an introduction to the Montréal dubstep duo Adventure Club, as we have feautring them countless of times for their unique style of to subtlely mixing dubstep elements into popular indie songs, James Vincent McMorrow’s “We Don't Eat” being one of them. Just yesterday they released a remix of the New Zealand born, New York based indie-musician LIPS, enhancing the original arraignment of “Everything To Me” into a slow burn dubstep track perfect for that last song to end the night.

Do not forget to also check out Christian Strobe Remix of “Everything To Me” we posted a while back.

Misfits Halloween Figure Moombahcore Edit Misfits Halloween (Figure Moombahcore Edit) + MAD DECENT MONSTER MIX

Following the previously blogged “This is halloween” from dubstep producer Figure, comes another mental release completely guilt-free to download. It is insane the amount of free songs he has been releasing on his facebook and this moombahcore curve ball of a track screems halloween all over it, literally. Using American rock band, Misfits, horror punk single ‘Halloween’, figure has created a monster that should be unleashed at every halloween party.

Cali psych-folk trio Megafaun have been around for a while, having played together in various incarnations since the mid-90s before forming the band in 2007. Since then, they’ve put out 4 records, including this year’s ‘Megafaun’, an intriguing blend of rock, folk, country and psychedelia, including highlight track ‘Kill The Horns’. A quietly powerful ballad, ‘Kill The Horns’ has a certain star quality that could make it everyone’s favourite new track.

Dog Is Dead new [Fresh Indie] Dog is Dead Hands Down

So last night I paid a visit to Electric Ballroom in Camden and fell in love with the support act of the night – Dog Is Dead. The 5 peice are signed to Atlantic and their choral epic ‘Hands down‘ single is set for release this Monday 31st. Having just done a UK tour leg with Bombay Bicycle Club, the boys have been on the road pretty much non stop, packing out plenty of festival tents along the way. Their positive and energetic live performance really suits their style and I’d place a hefty bet that these guys will start seeing a lot more of the UK Indie limelight.

Paper Crows: Gone

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 02:28 PM PDT

‘Gone’ is the B Side of the new Paper Crows single ‘When Friends Survive’. I’ve read fan comments that Paper Crows have ventured in a new direction, but the B Side suggests that the UK duo have just shown another side, rather than changed entirely. ‘Gone’ is complimentary contrast to the single with Emma’s beautiful vocal accompanied by Duncan’s sparse piano tintinnabulation.

When Friends Survive is released on November 7th through Pete Tong’s resurrected imprint ‘ffrr’.

Happy Friday and bring on Halloween! In that spirit we give you Graph Gonzales and her debut single ‘Eyes In The Dark’. A thumping beat drives dark, seductive, melodic synths inspired by the best of 80′s synth pop, think Kim Wilde and Laura Branigan. The shadowy melody twists and wraps around you as Graph’s impeccable vocals enchant you, it can easily be seen why she has already raised quite a lot of attention in her native Canada and why there is much more to come from this new electro talent.

[Introducing] Eos (Dubstep Producer)

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 01:21 PM PDT

Eos [Introducing] Eos (Dubstep Producer)
When I was fifteen, I spent most of my time off from school playing video games, hanging out on AOL, or thinking about boobs. While that sounds pretty standard to most of you, it’s definitely not the case with Leo Winokur.

Leo, who is also known as Eos, is a 15 year old dubstep producer out of the City of Angels. When he’s not in school, he spends his time on Logic Pro making tracks. His style is unique, and the songs that he chooses to remix are interesting. Instead of following the indie singer remix trend or the hip hop remix trend, he’s decided to go ahead and remix Top 40 tracks. Which is awesome, because it allows me to finally listen to a top 40 song and enjoy it.

His music has been noticed by local promoters, but there’s one problem. He’s only 15. So he frequently asked to come in and play, until they find out his age. Where this would piss most people off, Eos calmly accepts it, and focuses on producing instead.

Take some time and listen to the tracks below. They retain the catchy nature of a Top 40 track, but also have choppy intense synth and bass that you would find with Skrillex or Feed Me.

Oh and just to rub it in again – yes, he’s 15.
