The Rubens “Lay It Down”/ “My Gun”

Posted: 22 Oct 2011 05:30 PM PDT

The Rubens are a “three brothers and a friend” four-piece from Australia, and while they’re “unsigned” now, we’re pretty sure that status will be coming to an end real soon as more and more ears get tuned to their indie blues-rock goodness.

With its ability to stop anyone within earshot dead in their tracks and make them an instant fan, their magnificent “Lay It Down” lands as a great introductory point to the band, a swampy guitar-and-organ drenched blues ballad capped off by a killer vocal performance via the lazy, soulful drawls of frontman Sam Margin while oozing tangles of deep, tormented emotion out of its every instrumental component.

Even better is the dark “My Gun”, where creeping piano, yowling guitar and pitter-patter drums add a striking sway of old-Hollywood tension to a case of “break up/ make up” relationship drama hauntingly colored with metaphorical (or is it?) attempted murder poetics (“I never thought she’d finish me/ She shot me down and left me to bleed with my gun”).

Hear the songs below, then head on over to the band’s Facebook page to check out more of their music.

Beyonce featuring J. Cole “Party (Remix)”

Posted: 22 Oct 2011 12:44 PM PDT

We’re pretty sure no universe (alternate or otherwise) exists in which J. Cole is a worthy substitution for Andre 3000, but here the rapper is anyway taking the place of Three Stacks on what’s being dubbed the “official” remix to Beyonce’s “swagu”-birthing, ’90′s R&B-inspired ode to giving up the goods.

Andre best be still be the rapper heard and seen (even if he’s in animal form) when the video for this song eventually drops on Tuesday, but it’s hard to hate too much on Cole’s contribution here, his effortless “La Di Da Di” flow-referencing verse (“We out in Abu Dhabi/ We like to party/ We don’t cause trouble/ We just ride Bugatti…”) keeping in line with the laidback slickness of the throwback to New Jill Swing jeep jam’s.

The Ting Tings “Hang It Up”

Posted: 22 Oct 2011 12:11 PM PDT

Over a year after first teasing their still-unreleased second album with the sleek ’80′s disco strut of “Hands”, English duo The Ting Tings have finally gotten around to producing a follow-up effort in the form of “Hang It Up”, a return-to-cheerleader-hookery-form that should take them back to their advert-friendly heights where the band seemed to be heard basically everywhere.

Recycling the same spirited rhythmic spice that made previous Ting entries “Shut Up and Let Me Go” or “That’s Not My Name” brain-stapling highlights with it’s Beastie Boys-ish recipe of funk-rock guitar spikes, squiggly synths and clattery drum stomps, “Hang It Up” is more or less another platform for the ever-pouty Katie White and her partner Jules De Martino’s fun-filled sing-talk nothings, guaranteeing that by song’s end, endless chants of “You can hang it up/ You can hang it up/ This time baby you can hang it up” will be bouncing around the inside of the listener’s skull whether desired or not.

Below, take a listen to the boogie-tastic (and slightly better) Vanguard Remix of “Hang It Up”, the first of what’s sure to be a billion more re-imaginings of the tune:
