Eli Lieb: Album Review

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 08:54 AM PDT

Eli Lieb is a push back against a pop world that is pre-fabricated, auditioned and packaged for mass consumption. His candidly honest words and raw emotion shine through in every piece of music he creates. It is this honesty and raw talent that hooked me when heard his cover of Hurt‘s ‘Stay‘ and has kept me fixated ever since.

His self written and produced debut album drops tomorrow the 25th, and can only be described by one word – Cinematic. From the moment the first track ‘Red’ starts you know you are in for something truly powerful and amazing from the album that is full of rich and textured sounds that swirl around Eli’s powerful and expressive voice.

‘Red’
The instrumental start to the entire album, it sets the stage and the bar, which is quite high, for the entire album. Orchestral and cinematic and makes you feel as though you have just begun and epic film and cannot wait for it to unfold in front of you.

‘All I Wanted’
The swirling, rich sounds from ‘Red’ bleed over into a song that pairs Eli’s powerful voice. “I’m naked, shaking, blood is pounding.” Completely exposed, raw and unprotected, Eli beautifully sings about pain of longing for love.

Full of longing, deep and swirling strings and a dark synth that creates a song that is full of intense pain, confusion, and emotion. The dark chains of pain and regret are taken away by uplifting strings and powerful words “You’ll find your way home/All of these lines are coming down tonight/And let your walls cave in let the world around you die/And all this life you knew you tear it up tonight/Just open up your eyes and take it in this place of paradise.” The lead single is still my favorite track on the album.

‘Tightrope’
Piano cords and Eli create a song that conveys the pain and anger of someone who knows they must break free from someone who is no good for them, demanding more than can be given and wanting them to be something they aren’t, with just the slightest glimmer of relief to be free from the burden of constantly performing for them.

‘Tidal Wave’
A glaringly frank, yet bright and romantic love song. “Would you take my hand tonight I need a place to hide/If I crept inside your room would you say/That it’s you that I want that I’d die for/That it’s you that I need that I’ll wait for/Hoping a tidal wave will come and sweep us all away/And strand me.”

‘We Own The Beat’
The light hearted highlight of the album. Dancey and fun, with Eli seducing you with his voice and enjoying every beat.

‘Ghost’
Dark synths and a driving beats are paired with lyrics that struggle with life, your place in it and how do hold onto yourself. “Don’t ask me a question and I won’t tell you all my lies”

‘Red and Blue’
Eli perfectly captures the pain, anger and disbelief that comes with a duplicitous and dishonest relationship ending and the stage lights shining deeply into the secrets kept in the darkest of corners. “When the curtain fell your beast came out/No one saw it all but me/And to this day you’re still fooling everyone/Everyone but me/While you were telling me all these lies/You thought that I was blind.”

‘Call It A Day’
Overwhelmed and run down, when expectations have fallen flat, when the world has grown to loud, sometimes when life is just too much and you just need to escape to silence and comfort of home and reset.

‘Undone’
An unexpected and experimental end to the cinematic ride. Simple, bare, and powerful.

Last night Robyn and Röyksopp took over the legendary Hollywood Bowl and turned it into a huge outdoor dance party. Brent and I along with the gorgeous Franki and HUGE fanboy DJ MAJR were there for the party front and center! Robyn was amazing, flawless and filled with boundless energy. But the real highlight was when the two powerhouses came together to perform ‘Girl And The Robot’. So take a look at KKS exclusive footage from front row at the Hollywood Bowl as Robyn and Röyksopp close out the party with ‘Girl And The Robot’. (Please don’t mind that screaming lunatic you can hear in the video, that is just DJ MAJR losing his shit)
