Coldplay and Example Cover Rihanna’s “We Found Love” Posted: 27 Oct 2011 09:46 PM PDT It has become pretty much law that with every new Rihanna single, especially an uptempo one, world chart domination will be achieved and artists ranging from all aspects of the musical spectrum will then proceed to remake the song in their own genre-specific light. “We Found Love”, the pop princess’ controversial video-accompanied latest effort, can check off both boxes now, already reaching either No. 1 or the Top Five in nearly twenty different countries so far, and in the past couple of days, seizing the boast factor of being the Live Lounge cover pick for two different artists. On paper, the respective ideas of both Brit-rockers Coldplay and Brit-singer/rapper Example taking on the tune each have their own potential for awesomeness–with the melodrama encased in lyrics like “We found love in a hopeless place” already feeling tailor-made for Coldplay’s arena-ready pop-rock theatrics and Chris Martin’s widescreen falsetto swoops, and Example having slung out memorable flips on female pop hits in previous LL visits–however, in execution, there’s only one that really begs for more than a single listen. Both renditions melt down the taut Euro-club thump of the original into piano-pop ballad prettiness, which one would imagine guarantees Coldplay the obvious win considering that sound is their bread and butter, but it’s Example’s “Love” that ends up stealing Best Cover honors in our opinion here, his rap break-featured take managing to land a couple notches more interesting than Coldplay’s decent, though ho-hummingly too “Coldplay-ish”, version.
