Posted: 21 Oct 2011 08:31 PM PDT Long-running under-the-radar multi-talent Novel proves why he’s deserving of being mentioned among the Frank Ocean’s, Weeknd’s and Miguel’s of today’s acclaimed male soul world with this recent discovery, a remake of The Color Purple‘s Academy Award-nominated (and Quincy Jones, Rod Temperton and Lionel Richie co-penned) “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)” that the singer-songwriter-rapper-producer effectively manages to flip into something we could see becoming a sort-of left-field current R&B hit if given the chance. Bringing a slightly modernized polish to the song without losing traces of its harmonica-laced bluesy-soul roots, Novel injects the tune with the perfect dose of sweet and soulful sincerity, his vocal’s warm, Southern-fried texture (pleasantly speckled with bits of Prince-ish falsetto and layered into lush wisps of harmony) bringing a romantic, gentlemanly charm to the confidence boosting lyric that’s just oh-so-refreshing to lay ears on. Hear the song below, than a snatch up one of our favorites from Novel’s summer-released Grant Me Serenity mixtape, the Miike Snow/ “Animal”-nodding “Get You High”. Novel’s next album, Calligraphy, is due out soon. “Sister” (DL): “Get You High” (DL): |
