B.o.B featuring Andre 3000 “Play The Guitar” Posted: 27 Dec 2011 01:11 AM PST We believe it’s stated somewhere in the Laws of Man that any song with the credits “featuring Andre 3000″ must be heard as soon as possible (and subsequently slobbered over), so of course, when word got around that Triple Stacks was going to be lacing a tune off of B.o.B’s upcoming Strange Clouds, the cut was quickly deemed The Track The People Would Most Prefer To Be Leaked Like Yesterday. At midnight, Bobby Ray did man-kind a favor by giving the tune an official digital release, and as cool as it is to hear these two versatile cats finally get on a track together (if you recall, a lot of B.o.B’s early, pre-pop stardom buzz was built on his stylistic comparisons to Andre), it’s really all about Outkast’s “Odder” Half straight owning the track with a breathless verse that hop-scotches across awesome poetic nonsense (“Silver-back stacks/ Jumping out the jungle blowing tiger stripe bubbles with ‘Go to Hell’ bubble-gum”), rewind-worthy stabs of Deep (“My n*ggas doin’ way too much jewelry/ My chain lonely/ But they ain’t know nothin’ about black pearls, but I will show them/ Why the world sleepin’ on black girls?/ Hey, I don’t know man”), clever “gotcha” wordplay (“Excuse me if I’m no exhibitionist/ According to the Internet 3000 got a big ol’ dic–tionary full of words…”) and nuggets of wisdom for the children (“I encourage any child to pick up some instrument/ Cause if you’re mad at your Dad or Mum/ You can grab it and strum/ Eat your cabbage and corn/ By the time you’re done/ You will finally realize that they meant you no harm”). Is it too early to call this a front-runner for Best Verse of 2012? (via) B.o.B – 'Play The Guitar' (Feat. Andre 3000) by BreakonaCloud.com (iTunes) |
Posted: 26 Dec 2011 02:03 PM PST Though a new The xx album didn’t drop this past year, there was enough xx-related material bubbling forth in 2011 to sustain the band’s ubiquity around the blogosphere, be it through other artists’ continued obsession with covering their music or member Jamie xx keeping himself busy dropping solo singles and sculpting one-off remixes for Radiohead and Adele, not to mention an entire remix album with Gil Scott-Heron. Now, with word out that the band are finally getting around to recording a second full length, you can bet The xx’ dominant presence within the on-line music world will only continue throughout 2012. This past weekend, the band unleashed “Open Eyes”, a demo-level cut pulled from their current recording sessions, and even in rough draft form the song sounds like something special, making fine use of the space-as-instrument, seducing vocal and nocturnal moodiness elements that have become their much-cherished signature. |
