WZRD (Kid Cudi & Dot Da Genius) “Brake” Posted: 23 Nov 2011 05:16 PM PST Kid Cudi and producer Dot Da Genius‘ apparently still-a-thing alternative rock-themed side project (now going by the name WZRD) makes one more sluggish step towards the release of an actual album with new leakage “Brake”, a tune that in its couple days of existence has been drawing all the expected exclamation point-laced bursts of hyperbolic praise over social media outlets for being the most game-changing, greatest piece of recorded music ever. Coming from the same collaborative minds that brought us deliciously dark and cinematic exercises like Fright Night soundtrack single “No One Believes Me” and “Perfect Is The Word”, and the oh-so-compelling Bone Thugs n’ blunt-fueled hypnotism of “Day N Nite”, “Trapped In My Mind”, “Maybe” and “Marijuana”, “Brake”, on first sample, ranks a couple notches inferior in impressiveness, but with repeated listens to its initially underwhelming doodling-around-in-the studio aesthetic (our first thoughts: “That’s it?”), Dot’s sludgy, psychedelic guitar riffs as frame for a somber Cudi’s sing-songy internal struggle to “find [his] will to live” slowly wins over the brain, revealing itself to be another enrapturing peek into the darkest corners of the rapper’s mind. Expect the WZRD album to drop in Junaury. “Brake” (DL): BONUS: Kid Cudi “Lovestoned (Freestyle)” (DL): |
