Posted: 18 Nov 2011 06:45 PM PST Following earlier-this-year released covers of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” and Coldplay’s “The Scientist”, both of which turned out way better than they sounded on paper, Mike Posner continues his oddly compelling tour through other artist’s catalogs, digging a bit deeper into pop’s past with two new Pozner-ized remakes. As teasers for his forthcoming The Layover mixtape, both are sure to draw up some polarizing opinions, not so much because Mike’s weirdly toned chops just aren’t every one’s cup of tea, but due to the fact that dude’s really edging into “Blasphemy!!!” territory by being so bold as to take on such revered treasures as Elton John’s “Rocket Man” and Oasis’ “Wonderwall”. That’s right, the guy who’s somewhat sadly not known anywhere as The Poz is messing with some classics here, however, like the aforementioned Adele/ Coldplay covers, he’s not concerned with providing simple re-imaginations, recasting the records with some spacey electro-pop-meets-Southern hip hop flavor that’s interesting far beyond a single curious sample. His take on Elton and Bernie Taupin’s timeless 1972 tale of a lonely astronaut (or, depending on your own interpretation, lonely rock star or lonely drug addict) is damn near brilliant, the frosty, slo-mo ambiance of Posner’s production, decorated with various blippity-bloop and whooshing effects, nicely complimenting the outer space-set, forlorn melodrama sketched in the lyrics, with the one and only Bun B perking up the final third with his always-appreciated Texan swag. “Rocket Man” featuring Bun B (Elton John Cover) (DL): For “Wonderwall”, Posner masterfully flips the beloved Brit-pop ballad into a smashing hip-pop midtempo, crafting a densely-layered street corner swing for the verses before taking things all starry-eyed on the synth-bedazzled chorus; it’s featured guest Big K.R.I.T. who ends up stealing the show though, the up-and-down relationship roller coaster chronicled in his verse contribution providing the latest example of why he’s the rap up-and-comer to beat these days. “Wonderwall” featuring Big K.R.I.T. (Oasis Cover) (DL): The Layover drops November 20th. |
