T.I. featuring Dr. Dre “Popped Off” Posted: 01 Jan 2012 07:04 PM PST T.I.‘s been on a roll since his return to the public a few months back, littering the Interwebz and iTunes with a steady string of singles, videos, cameo appearances and freestyle/ remixes to help re-assert his position as one of the top players in today’s rap game. Assuring this hot streak continues on until the release of his forthcoming “comeback” effort Trouble Man, today saw the arrival of his newest mixtape F*ck Da City Up and tacked on the tail-end of the banger-heavy sixteen-track set lies the complete version of high-profile heater “Popped Off”, a Dr. Dre collaboration previously heard in alternate versions in that 2009 Dr. Pepper commercial and as part of the handful of possible Detox-affiliated leaks that bubbled up in the blogosphere around the same time. Whatever its past (or future?) “official” purpose, “Off”, in current form, definitely succeeds as a fierce “gangsta party” jam that could finally give the much-delayed Detox the proper jump-off look its previous first single psyche-outs lacked, the crisp regal touch of its horn-heavy Kool & The Gang sample proving to be an ideal backdrop for T.I.’s slick swag gab (“My style is so spazz/ I pop tags daily, drop Phantom, four eighty/ Walk up in the place, and all the ladies go crazy/ Want to get impregnated, all they get is throat babies”) while even Dre, never really known for having that great of a mic presence, manages to earn a few delivery kudos for himself with a better-than-expected use of a nimble (read: blatantly Em-assisted) flow.
