Rich Kid Sound System Tackles Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” (Along With A Couple Others)

Though Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used To Know” spawned a bunch of inevitable remixes in the weeks following much of the blogosphere’s verdict of the international chart-topper being one of 2011′s Greatest Tunes Ever, we’re still a little surprised that the there wasn’t around a million more covers and re-imaginations of the massively acclaimed Police-ish record, especially considering the song’s “instant classic” pop quality seemed to ensure that the song would have reached “Rolling In The Deep”-like levels of remake ubiquity by this point.

Perhaps folks just needed a little time, as the past few days have seen a few remixes/ covers of the tune emerge on the Interwebs and begin striking up some considerable on-line noise.

Earning the nod of being the most musically creative of the recent “Somebody”-referencing bunch would have to be the amazing remix by Rich Kid Sound System, the versatile South Florida outfit adding slick rhymes that dig even deeper into the emotional turmoil of the original’s relationship soap opera drama (“You had my heart/ Tried to keep a piece/ Now all you want is a quarter back but that pass is incomplete”; “I used to know you/ Well at least the old you/ Damn she was so cool/ Now ain’t shit that I owe you”) while re-configuring the ballad into a stomping, slightly club-targeting hip-pop beast with the strength to become a hit all on it’s own.

Hear/ DL their remix below, then catch a couple other recent noteworthy covers of “Somebody”: one by singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson of “The Way I Am” fame (via From Go To Whoa), and a second from Canadian band Walk off the Earth, whose version is highlighted by a very impressive (and, no doubt, future “viral sensation”) clip revolving around a “five people/ one guitar” theme.
