Happy New Year From Kick Kick Snare!

Posted: 30 Dec 2011 04:26 PM PST

Launching Kick Kick Snare and being able to share my daily musical observations, and experiences has changed my life entirely. Best decision I’ve ever made. Just within this last year, I welcomed three stellar contributing writers to the platform, I was chosen by GRAMMY to be the official electronica and dance blogger for the 54th award season, traveled the U.S. attending more concerts and festivals then Craig can count, hosted KKS’s first string of industry showcases, booked over 20 acts and interviews, started the 8 year process that is the redesign of the site, printed the first KKS t-shirt, and was knocked on my side by an artist I’m going to start managing in 2012. And those are just some of the highlights.

2012 is going to be a kick ass year to say in the least. From the image above you can see I’ve highlighted a few albums I’m looking forward to, including Die Antwoord’s Ten$ion, Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die and Alex Boyd’s debut. And if the GRAMMY’s in February isn’t enough to make us hyperventilate, I’m thrilled to announce that KKS will very much have a presence at SXSW in March. And of course there’s the Live in the Vineyard festival in April… I’m getting excited just started to think about everything on our plate and just in the first quarter! And as I mentioned above, an artist came into my life a couple months back and changed the game. Never thought I could imagine dedicating the majority of my time to one artist. Now I can’t imagine otherwise. More on that in 2012!

Hope everyone’s as excited as we are! Be part of the action! Purchasing a KKS t-shirt (Click here!) is a great way to show your support for the effort we put into the site. And of course liking us on facebook, following us on Twitter and sharing our site with your friends is the best holiday gift we could ask for! We wish you a happy and safe New Years and promise to continue stepping things up in 2012. Resolutions? In Jessie J’s words, “Just be true to who you are!”

[Album] Big Gigantic – Nocturnal

Posted: 30 Dec 2011 01:42 PM PST

nocynocy 998x1024 [Album] Big Gigantic Nocturnal

Magic is in the air. I look outside my window and see snowing falling, fake Santa Clauses dancing around, people in the mood for great music and energy. I was wondering what this new year would bring in terms of new sounds and POW! From the sky falls Big Gigantic and their upcoming album "Nocturnal" (I'm not kidding, I still have a hole in my ceiling due to the collision).

Big Gigantic, the electro-hop duo from Colorado, is led by saxophonist Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken. If you listened to any of their music you are probably wondering HOW. If you haven't listened to their tunes then stop reading RIGHT NOW and do it. As I had mentioned in an earlier post, BG alternates between keys, sax, and laptop, creating a frenetic blend of electronic, dance and hip-hop. One of their awaited tracks “Rise and Shine" was previously featured at the Music Ninja along with a great performance of them live. So if you missed the post, click here and it’ll teleport you right to it.

Their upcoming album "Nocturnal" is to be released January 11th, 2011; it's composed of 11 tracks and every single one is greatly put together. Lalli and Salken experiment on sounds that compliment each other so well the energy never stops. There is a bit for everyone's taste (yeah, even Dubstep). Feel free to play this album while you drive, shower, as background music for a killer party, you choose.

Big Gigantic's Nocturnal Tour 2012 starts January 18th in the beautiful mountain town of Aspen, CO; then some of their other shows are:

Boulder Theater, Boulder, CO- January 20th
Crowbar, Tampa, FL- February 3rd
Buckhead Theater, Atlanta, GA- February 10th
9:30 Club, Washington DC- February 17th
Webster Hall, New York, NY- February 19th
(For more dates and info on Big Gigantic's Nocturnal Tour 2012 go here)

If you're sad you didn't get that gift for Christmas (a.k.a Music Ninja T-Shirt) definitely try to make it to one of their shows. Their energy will leave you in a great mood for weeks and it'll be a great way to start the year. This time, we leave you with their album feature track "Nocturnal" which best describes the type of upbeat energy Big Gigantic has got to offer. Enjoy.

[LP] Penguin Prison – PENGUIN PRISON (w/ every Penguin Prison track TBE has ever posted)

Posted: 30 Dec 2011 11:02 PM PST

i got a car that i call jenny, i take her out when there’s too much noise in my head

♫ Penguin Prison – A Funny Thing [from 2009]

♫ Penguin Prison – The Worse It Gets [from 2010]

The October 18th release of Penguin Prison’s self-titled debut is interesting for a couple reasons. The first thing is that I didn’t know it came out until 6 weeks late. And I think the second thing is directly tied to the 1st. Penguin Prison has been around so long that it seems hard to believe that his album hasn’t been out for years! TBE has been posting singles from the album since 2009 (above) and that doesn’t even include “Something I’m Not” and “Fair Warning” which also came out as singles before the album came out. Add on the heavily remixed “Multimillionaire” and new single “Don’t f*** With My Money” and over half the album has been out for ages. And we haven’t even got into the remixes! Both of Penguin Prison, but mostly by him (see below for the FOURTEEN that have been posted on TBE). I have to imagine that the album could have been more talked about if he had capitalized on early blog buzz. With hours worth of Chris Glover’s material saturating our ears it’s had to imagine that it could hold any interest or pack any surprises, right? Right? (wait for it…)

Wrong! The album is awesome! I have been playing it on repeat ever since nabbing it a few weeks ago and even surprising myself with how much I am digging these jams. I guess hearing so many of them as remixes for so long make the originals refreshing! Plus there are gems like “Golden Train” and “Pinocchio” that would be enough to get any blog buzzing on their own merits. Penguin Prison’s production is impeccable, filled with hooks and grooves that never quit. Plus is voice is like a swiss army knife of dance vocals, from MJ-esque falsettos to smooth indie crooning, he kicks all the tracks to 11. If you haven’t picked this LP up yet then do your NYE a favor and get it now. Somehow it was actually worth the wait.

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Album: Penguin Prison ‘Penguin Prison’

Posted: 29 Dec 2011 08:39 PM PST

Penguin Prison is something very special in the musical world and his debut album is a masterpiece of musical storytelling that is both thought evoking and dance inducing. Penguin Prison has worked hard to create sounds that are truly unique and completely unlike anything else in music, yet at the same time evoke deep feelings and emotional triggers that are tied to timeless sounds. The album fuses disco, soul, funk and rock – drawing on a range of inspiration from Wu Tang to Nat King Cole – creating genre defying sounds in each song. The unique sounds are blended with powerful lyrics that are able to explain the complexity of many emotions in easily relatable prose. A huge part of this is his ability to pull lyrical inspiration for his own life and others around him has enabled him to create songs that tie into feelings and stories are universal to us all.

Penguin Prison is in short – an album I cannot live without.

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Album: The War On Drugs “Slave Ambient”

Posted: 29 Dec 2011 01:14 PM PST

On almost every level, The War On Drugs have crafted the perfect follow up to ‘Wagonwheel Blues’, their 2008 debut album. An undeniable treasure of expansive rock, 'Slave Ambient' melds the sound of the past, present and future into a 47 minute sprawl that's as euphoric as it is multifaceted and runs steady as my favorite album of the year, pedal pushed to the floor.

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Album: Hoodie Allen’s “Leap Year”

Posted: 29 Dec 2011 12:07 PM PST

Album, Mixtape, same thing, right? Whichever, Hoodie Allen‘s Leap Year (which is available for direct download here) is my favorite of 2011. Undoubtedly, one of the most exciting and fulfilling moment’s his musical career, and rightfully so.

Hoodie began writing Leap Year when he decided to leave his job at Google to follow his passion. The thirteen track album is a look into his world and what it means to step out of one’s comfort zone. He wanted Leap Year to mirror his life and experiences–it's fun, crazy, sarcastic, and introspective– its him growing up on record.

When I first posted about Leap Year, I received this note from Hoodie which after you read, you’ll understand the smile I’m still wearing: “I want to quickly emphasize how important having the support of Kick Kick Snare has meant to me. I mean you’ve been a real friend to me man that’s the truth. Any attention I have ever received has been because of the blogs that support me and spread my music all over the world. It's because of your support that I've been able to be this person and that's why to this day I won't ever stop personally emailing you all my new projects.”

Pyro Fighter – The Whole Universe Knows My Name (Atrasolis Remix)

pyro web1 Pyro Fighter The Whole Universe Knows My Name (Atrasolis Remix)

With electronica music being as large as it is right now, it’s not a surprise when you see someone switch from another genre of music to start producing EDM. Skrillex is probably the most famous example, but there’s also been Celldweller, and Atrasolis as well.

Atrasolis started off in the music business by playing in post-hardcore bands. After his band broke up, he started composing on his own, including electro and dubstep tracks. While we haven’t checked out much of his work, we really dug this track in particular. Take note of the frenetic synths and heavy bass which slice up Pyro Fighter’s electro-pop song..

The Best Party Songs of 2011

Posted: 29 Dec 2011 03:58 PM PST

Yes! In time for NYE! This is my favorite year-end list to make because its obviously the most fun. And I give it the least amount of stress. Read on for all my favorite party/dance jams split into three increasingly heated sections. Almost all these tracks could fit into the last one but I had to split them up somehow! There is not much organization here, just grooves for miles. So polish those dancing shoes and get limber because I wanna see you bounce!

Note that the list ends with a very appropriate title (and song) for New Years Eve. (Also note that the 3 songs before that make a great combo title.) So hit play on the whole 3-part playlist at 21:31:30 if you want perfect new years eve timing!

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Album: The Drums “Portamento”

The Drums' Portamento

We are obviously living in a world that proves the age old fable that everything is cyclical, hence, we are back where we started when it comes to music distribution: singles are the name of the game. This had a bit to do with my choice for album of the year, but I’ve got to say, that singles also drive us (as music fans) to dive into the full album full force. After consuming that crap out of “I Need A Doctor” and “Money” (listen to both below), I dove into the full album and was impressed and white-guy-spasm-dancing fo’ DAYS. Great tunes, coupled with a religious theme and badass cover art, to quote a classic video game, Boomshakalakalaka.

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Song: il gato “On Feathers & Arrows (on Burnt Pine)”

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 06:21 PM PST

il gato

In another year where artistic-electronic manipulation of sound rules most of the music we know and Love, it was this track, by the San Fran natives “il gato” that continues to blow me away with it’s “Indie-Baroque-Folkness”  (did not come up with that… but I like.) There are so many angles I could take to explain why I like this track: the instrumentation, the ups and downs, THE VIDEO, the fact that it has moved me to tears more on more than one occasion. This piece is beautiful in every sense of the word. It’s tracks like this one, and Ray Charles’ “Georgia“, and Atmosphere’s “God’s Bathroom Floor“, and Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Danse Macabre“… I listen to these works and truly feel the joy, via the synapses popping off in my head, as if we could view them visually, it would be like another amazing episode of Planet Earth. Listen to the song, watch the video, if you don’t like it, then I could say some things that will probably offend someone, so…

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Song: Oh Land ‘White Nights’

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 11:33 AM PST

There is a tranquil and bright energy that just bursts from every glitter covered bit of Oh Land. It reaches out from her music, her videos and her very presence to calm, uplift, and rejuvenate. For me 2011 was a year of big risks, restlessness, and brave (though at times not well thought out) leaps, and there is no better song to explain that swelling of anxiety, uncertainty, risk and of course hopeful and driven optimism than ‘White Nights’. 2011 may have been a year where to top of the charts were filled with pounding beats and near meaningless lyrics, but for me 2011 was about a down shift, soft beats, graceful vocals and an introspective look at yourself and the world you are creating.

These dreams under my pillow
In the twilight of these white nights
Of these white nights
Something is about to be born
There’s a restlessness in me
Keeps me up until the dawn
There is no silence
I will keep following the sirens

[REMIX] We Barbarians – “Headspace” (Grouplove + Captain Cuts Remix)

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 08:05 PM PST

i need to get some movement

♫ We Barbarians – Headspace (Grouplove + Captain Cuts Remix)

Captian Cuts once remixed Grouplove and landed that track on the Best Remixes of 2011 list. Now they have teamed up to rework We Barbarians and the results are predictably epic. The relatively unknown L.A. band’s single gets a total facelift, as well as a jet pack, that shoots into a seriously jamming galaxy. A galaxy that is also home to a “Heartbeats” sample. Genius. Too many cooks definitely didn’t ruin this stew!

The 15 Best Cover Songs of 2011

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 07:43 PM PST

Welcome to the end of the year. A time for reflection, for resolutions, for binge drinking, and for me telling you what was good in the TBE hood! Kicking things off are my 15 favorite covers spanning all genres and damn near all instruments. Guys! Girls! Guys singing girls’ songs! Girls singing guys’ songs! It’s mayhem! Strap in, rock on, and let me know if I missed your favorite cover of the year.

15. ♫ Jimmy Cliff – Ruby Soho (Rancid cover) / Reggae legend + Punk legends = Legendary.

14. ♫ Sondre Lerche – Countdown (Beyonce cover) / The acoustic guitar cover is as old as the game but rarely is it done so simply. Sondre barely strums yet still convey’s the songs soul perfectly.

13. ♫ Oh Land – Bloodbuzz Ohio (The National Cover) / Oh Land dips this track in oozing wax and puts her stamp right in its heart.

12. ♫ Joywave – Hang With Me (Robyn Cover) / A leftfield cover that sounds like a home run. A really sedated home run.

11. ♫ The Death Set – Grinding Halt (The Cure) / Completely flipping a track’s genre is always tricky but here I’m too busy thrashing to really notice how they did.

10. ♫ Mayer Hawthorne – When The Night Falls (Chromeo Cover) / Two words: smooooo and ooooth.

9. ♫ Hercules & Love Affair – Shelter (The xx cover) / The best gap filler until new The xx. I wouldn’t mind a whole album of Herc covering xx.

8. ♫ Javier Dunn – Animal (Miike Snow cover) / Dunn strips back the original’s signature bleeps & bloops leaving only the haunting echo of the beautifully rendered lyrics.

7. ♫ Freelance Whales – Girl U Want (Cars cover) / An unlikely pairing makes for tender magic. A testament to the Whales’ craft.

6. ♫ John Legend – Rolling in the Deep (Adele Cover) / Legend lives up to his name by covering this monster completely a capella. I didn’t even notice there were no instruments until my 16th listen. Damn dude.

5. ♫ Health – Goth Star (Pictureplane cover) / Tidy up the production, add some lyrics, and turn it all to 11 and you have got yourselves a jam of a cover.

4. ♫ Sunday Girl – Where Is My Mind? (The Pixies cover) / Listening to this stops time for a moment. And colors get brighter.

3. ♫ The National – Twenty Miles To NH Part 2 (The Philistines Jr cover) / I’ve still never heard the original but at this point I don’t think I will ever be able to appreciate it. The National have turned it into snowy gold.

2. ♫ The Silent League – Texico Bitches (Broken Social Scene cover) / Swinging indie rock perfection.

1. ♫ Skull Tape – Whip My Hair (Drowning In Blood) (Willow Smith Cover) / I pretty much had this one stuck on repeat most of the year. I’d begrudge them tacking their own song on the end of the track if a) they didn’t crush the cover so hard, and b) their jam didn’t flow so brilliantly.

[LP] Yalls – YALLS (w/ “Please”)

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 03:12 PM PST

oh no, i can’t think

♫ Yalls – Please

Not enough people are talking about Yalls and since the year is closing out it’s time to get one last endorsement in the ring for this Berkley beat-fruit tree. “Germs” is one of the years top tracks and the rest of Dan Casey’s name-your-price debut LP is more of the same weirdo magic. Although the phrase “more of the same” can’t really be applied here as Yalls’ music is pretty outside the box. Altered Zones called Yalls “zonked-ou beat-folk” and I think thats the best we are ging to get. So the next time you need an 18 part soundtrack for a coyote-drawn carriage ride through murmuring space-scapes turn to Yalls. And keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle.
