Nicki Minaj “Stupid Hoe”

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 10:47 PM PST

Between Azealia Banks and Nicki Minaj, we’ve been getting an overabundance of some of the weirdest female emcee business this season, the two seemingly in some sort of never-ending challenge to see who can be the kookiest.

“Stupid Hoe” is the latest preview from Nicki’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and it is just as lyrically/ musically insane as its predecessor “Roman In Moscow”, an overly animated cacophony of whistles, handclaps, air sirens and what sounds like Pac-Man sound effects providing a fitting playground-like foundation for the Big Bootied One’s usual multiple personality mic antics (numerous accent switch-ups, extended syllables, random turns of singing, etc.) and lady-slaying stings (“These bitches is my sons and I don’t want custody”).

It’s also good for only a single listen or two, the been-there/ heard-that tricks on display here just not carrying the same addictive WTF spark so close to “Moscow”‘s release and the far more adventurous (and exciting) material Banks has been throwing out recently.

Are we saying we’re ready for Nicki to switch gears up and give us some of that pop tart flavor previously mined on “Your Love” and “Check It Out”? Not necessarily, nor do we long for her to get all serious and personal on us “Right Thru Me”-style just yet, but with Azealia nipping at her heels in the Department of Bat-Shit Lunacy with catchier beats and more memorable oral sex-themed lines, let’s just say Minaj is going to have to start thinking up newer and fresher ways to flex her creativity beyond the same ol’ same ol’. Coco O (of Quadron) “Ex-Factor (Lauryn Hill Cover)”

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 06:11 PM PST

One of many reasons why folks, including us, continue to remain patient in waiting for Lauryn Hill to work through her issues and give us the real Miseducation of Lauryn Hill follow-up we’ve been anticipating for what feels like three lifetimes now: the soul-piercing greatness of that album’s third cut and second single, “Ex-Factor”.

Aided by a brilliantly lain Wu-Tang-referencing sample, a fiery guitar solo, some amazing pen-work and THAT VOICE!!, Lauryn was at the peak of her powers with the way she poured her everything into this classic number, a strikingly raw unrequited love tale that could best be described to the kiddies of today as being equivalent to that emotionally weighty feeling they get when hearing a great Adele ballad TIMES A ZILLION.

Coco O., of Danish soul-pop outfit Quadron, is one of the very few vocalists of today (alongside Adele) we could ever imagine gifting us with a worthwhile cover of the tune, and as you can see in the performance below, she doesn’t at all disappoint, filling up every space of this sparsely constructed rendition with just the perfect supply of pain-soaked soul.

Hit play and proceed to have your breath taken away.

Nelly “Lotus Flower Bomb (Freestyle)”

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 04:36 PM PST

Not since probably the days when “Grillz” began its lengthy domination over the club scene have we truly felt the need to really bump something new from Nelly, with his career since that chart-topping tune bringing forth a lackluster string of singles and albums that only seemed to accelerate the one-time rap-pop king’s tumble down the rungs of the Relevant Ladder (Sure 5.0 sole hit, the recent-era Eminem-esque “Just A Dream”, ended up being a heavily rotated fave among his more mainstream followers, but banger it was not).

Might hope be found with the release of the “Country Grammar” emcee’s Christmas Eve-premiering debut mixtape O.E. MO (On Everything MO), with the set carrying the promise of at least a semi-notable beat-jack street-flavored jam or two?

Possibly, but after hearing Nelly’s “freestyle” take on Wale’s for-the-ladies’ joint “Lotus Flower Bomb”, let’s just say we’re not necessarily holding our breath.

Nell doesn’t necessarily sound bad here, the sound of his familiar sing-song delivery crooning all types of R&B thug naughtiness atop producer Jerrin Howard‘s lush synth lullaby of a slow jam groove conjuring up the feeling that the song might have actually been a modest success for him had he got to the beat first. But A: at this point, this doesn’t seem like the thing Nelly should be doing right now (once again, bring on the BANGERS!!), and B: if a remix to this has to be done, a full on R&B re-imagination by original version highlight Miguel or someone like a Raheem DeVaughn just seems like it would be a lot more welcome.
