[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite New Artists: Johnny Stimson & Rai Knight

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 09:12 AM PST

It’s a tie. Both just hit my heart in the same place, and if I choose just Johnny, Rai will beat me up. Two different artists with two different deliveries, but an identical match in the amount of punch. He may not know this yet, but I’ve decided to tour the world with Johnny, and you best believe we’ll be passing through Detroit to hang out with Rai. Hands down “Penny” and “Moonstruck” are two songs I’ve played on repeat, repeatedly, and will continue doing so in 2012.

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite New Band: Alt-J

The artists formerly known as Films, are now a band with a name, , that can only be written on a Mac computer by holding down the Alt key and hitting J – but don't hold that against them. Alt-J's astonishing demos EP is one of the most innovative and downright listenable releases I've heard all year; it's intricate arrangements flicker with sharp hooks, clattering beats and glow with a maturity and confidence that’s well beyond their years. If this EP is a promise of what's to come, I can't wait. But for now … let's Tessellate.

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite New Artist: St. Lucia

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

2011 has been a year packed with a lot of fantastic music and much of comes from new talent just beginning to share their music with us. I went back and forth between a few artists in trying to decided which out of all the musicians out there would be my favorite. In the end St. Lucia beat out KKS, and my own, favorites Zak Waters, Florrie, Strange Talk and Queen of Hearts to take the mantle of my favorite new artist.

St. Lucia beat out my other contenders by consistently creating expertly crafted and inspired music, that has a nostalgically futuristic feel that is beautifully warm and full of percussive atmospheric sounds wrapped around poetic lyrics and addictive melodic hooks. (DISCLAIMER: I can be a bit emo at times. So I like my  musicians to make me feel their music, not just hear it) The source for this sound is as illusive as the music is brilliant, feeling like it could be from anywhere and yet no where at the same, a reflection of St. Lucia‘s global heritage and influences. St. Lucia is set to release his first proper EP in early 2012, having already completely hooked everyone who hears him with three buzz tracks, I can only imagine the demand for the EP will continue to surge. In full disclosure I have had the pleasure of seeing St. Lucia twice in the past month and I can confirm the new material will live up to everything we have already heard, and possibly outshine them all together.

‘We Got It Wrong’

‘All Eyes On You’

‘The Old House Is Gone’

Stay tuned to KickKickSnare for exclusive video of ATG’s New Noise performance of new material, ‘Elevation’ was definitely a stand out track.
