[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Solo Artist: Jamie XX

Posted: 24 Dec 2011 10:05 AM PST

2011 has been the year that has seen Jamie Smith step out of the shadows of the Mercury-award winning The XX and into the spotlight as a mastermind of UK production. His reputation as one of the most engaging and creative producers of the year has grown with each high profile project; from February's reworking of Gil-Scott Heron's 'I'm New Here' through to his pulsing remix of Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep'. Top that off with a couple of remixes for Radiohead, a breathtaking 12inch single on the always excellent Numbers label and a stint manning the production for Drake & Rhianna's smash 'Take Care' and I think it's fair to say that Jamie's had a pretty good year! Hold tight 2012.

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Solo Artist: Eliza Doolittle

Eliza Doolittle’s debut album may have been released in the U.K. in 2010, but didn’t hit the States until Spring of 2011. So it is with elation that she is the artist I title my Favorite Solo Artist of 2011. I could go on about her lyrics, her voice, or how every song will have you dancing along and addicted to the fine Miss Doolittle. (There are three songs alone off her self-titled debut in my Top 25 Most Played playlist on iTunes as a perfect example, including “Missing” which is ranked #4.) But there’s really nothing to argue here or to have to justify. A solid and perfect choice, thankyouverymuch.

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Solo Artist: Michael Kiwanuka

As you have probably heard, Michael Kiwanuka is the acoustic-folk-funk artist hailing from London, who bares an amazing audible resemblence to Bill Withers. Honestly I would have written about him yesterday, but as I realized, I don’t really listen to TOO many true solo artists, so I thought today would be more appropriate. We here at KKS have actually wrote about this dude twice over the past year, so you most likely know a bit about him already, if not, this is what I know: he’s 23, he’s been writing songs for a measely three years (but certainly does not show it), his first big tour was an opening spot with Adele, and he will be releasing his full length album debut this March with Home Again. As we wrote back in late November, he recently released the title track/debut single for Home again, and it is another beautifully written, whimsical, “maturing” piece, it is also embedded below for your listening experience. Happy Holiday Eve!

[8 Days of Kicksmas 2011] Favorite Solo Artist: Nicola Roberts

*DISCLAIMER*
1. I have an unhealthy obsession with pop girl bands.
2. I have an unhealthy admiration for redheads.

Now that those formalities are taken care of, it is time for this bleeding heart pop fan to share with you his favorite Solo Artist of 2011. Honestly it was easy to make this choice, I cannot think of a solo artist this year that really was able to something as impressive as what Nicola Roberts has done (Sorry Katy Perry MJ is turning over).  Nicola adeptly transformed from being a young star as part of one of best selling girl pop groups in the world to a bonafide pop star with her own unique mature sound, refusing to settle as a producer’s musical cue lost in someone else’s vision.

Her solo debut Cinderella's Eyes is an album that perfectly blends, melds and mixes all that the pop powerhouse production team at Xenomania does best with musical influences from all over the indie-pop spectrum. Drawing on retro-nu wave synths, brooding guitars, banging bass, and sexy struts. Even while working with very talented musicians who have very distinct sounds she is able to remain true to a sound that is all Nicola, while infusing the best from everyone she is working with. From the powerful guitars and synths of the Dragonette produced 'Yo-Yo', and 'Gladiator', to the deeply introspective 'Sticks + Stones', to 'Fish Out of Water' which pulls in the best of moody indie electro-rock (think The XX), there is of course the incredibly upbeat 'Lucky Day' that rivals the spirit of the best Kylie Minogue tracks that come to mind, and finally 'Say It Out Loud' is beautiful synthpop that rivals Robyn and Bright Light Bright Light.

She may not have been the 'star' of Girls Aloud, or may have been seen as a "rude ginger bitch", but not an ounce of that matters when your music and your talent clearly shine bright all on their own. Nicola Roberts has stepped into the spotlight as her own artist willing to take risks and push the boundaries of what it means to create amazing pop music, and really at the end of the day great music trumps all.

Kent’s favorite new artist of the year (yay first person shout outs): ANR. The Reason, not just the music, but the incredible amount of effort they put in to making phenominally complex, catchy, fun, infectious music, and numerous pieces of beautifully crafted a/v art. Repping their home town of Miami for days, and touting a trippified stallion album cover, ANR certainly made a splash in 2011 and now look to take their brand of layertronic-indie-pop-folk (whooray blog-terms) to the next level. Starting with an original video by Neon Gold TV and quite possibly the GREATEST CHRISTMAS COVER EVER (see below), I’m excited to see what’s next for ANR, like that kid that got an N64 for Christmas.
