That’s not to say I don’t know how to take a recommendation as well. Hell, it’s an integral part of the job. However, there are a select few people who one doesn’t imagine a music blogger takes recommendations from. Namely parents. What do those old coffin-dodgers know about new music? Well, in my case it was my step-mother who kick started my passion for music when she sat me down for a mixtape crafting session some 20 years ago. So luckily for me I can take music recommendations from my mother without dying inside. As if that truly touching story wasn’t enough, take this jam as living proof of why even 29 year olds should listen to their parents. Or at least listen to Gary Clark Jr: The resident king of the Austin, TX, blues/rock scene. The guy has chops for miles and a voice that betrays his youth. “Bright Lights” is a perfectly updated version of the classic slow-grind jam anyone can relate to. Simple yet soulful. Story over substance. Craftsmanship over volume. After all, every May 3rd in Austin is official Gary CLark Jr day (proclaimed when he was just 17) and the guy has won the Austin Music Award for Best Blues and Electric Guitarist 3 times.
