Posted: 31 Oct 2011 02:52 PM PDT With the departure of member Blue reducing their lineup to a trio, the Virginian alt-hip hop band formerly known as The Five One may have taken on a new moniker (RDGLDGRN, pronounced Red Gold Green), but by the sound of new single “I Love Lamp”, it’s safe to say that they’ve lost little grasp of the catchy-eclectic song-craft skills that helped make them a buzzed-about blog favorite in recent years. An early preview of forthcoming EP When In Rome, the Lightspeed Champion-esque “Lamp” delivers too-cool-for-school indie rock swag on the surface, though beneath the squalling guitars and thunderous drum pummel, life isn’t as perky for singer-rapper Gold, captured here wallowing in the freshly-dumped blues (“I never knew I’d feel like I’m dead/ Cause I lost my bottom lady for a one night stand…”). It’s hard to feel too sorry for him, considering he eventually admits to not being the most faithful long distance boyfriend (“I cheat/ And no it ain’t right”), but mostly because you’ll probably be too busy being distracted by “Lamp”‘s giddy indie bop while singing along to the “Come on”‘s and “I don’t wanna be you friend”‘s at top-of-lung volume to pay much attention to the ego-pierced woe at its core. Catch the video/ stream of “I Love Lamp” below, followed by the even more Pitchfork-friendly (and slightly Vampire Weekend reminiscent) Gold Remix: |
