I’ve never been here y’all (sorry, had to). From my excitement, you’d think I just landed in Bora Bora, stepping into a private over water bungalow. As a true music connoisseur, I would go any length to hear one of my favorite new songs by a promising upcoming artist. The song? Penny. Soul, Funk, Indie rock, and Reggae influences all combine to create a stand-out electro-pop sound that rocks the Bay Area week in and week out. Or this? Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Little Dragon, James Blake, Erykah Badu, J. Dilla, Flying Lotus and Beach House are the listed inspirations of a band with vocalists, keyboard, percussion, sampler, synchronizer, drummer, and bass player/sound engineer. Most of the time, more is just more, but in this case, more impossibly blends into an incredible and original sound that makes up the self-titled debut album of The Seshen, set to drop in February 2012. Spearheaded by Aki Ehara, a self-proclaimed music nerd and self-trained recording engineer, the band didn’t just find a niche, they created their own, and now we get to reap the benefits. Check out their new song Oblivion, below, and realize this band isn’t about to sink in that titular direction anytime soon. Twisted, derelict, and dark images fill the first video from the very talented singer/songwriter ZZ Ward. The video is the perfect compliment to a track that is just as dark and twisty. Eerie beats and a bluesy sound mix with ZZ‘s soulful voice and introspective lyrics to create something that really sounds like nothing else in music. Growing up in Oregon her childhood was filled with blues, songwriting and powerful woman. It is these woman, Etta James and Big Mama to name just two, that made the biggest mark on the young musician. She continues the tradition of these great female performs while adding her own unique perspective by blending the power of blues with the authenticity of hip-hop. The titillating video and seductive bit of pop above is the newest tease from the amazing Britt Love. Throbbing synths perfectly off set Britt’s seductive soprano voice. Britt Love has already made a name for herself as one half of the pop group Mini Viva and most recently teamed up with Monarchy to make their newest single unstoppable and completely amazing.
