[EXCLUSIVE] V.V. Brown: Famous (Live at DC9) Posted: 07 Nov 2011 10:09 AM PST Click here to view the embedded video. Along with the great new track ‘Tough Like Glue’ V.V. Brown also performed the new track ‘Famous’. A poignant and, as true to V.V., powerful commentary on society’s urge to be famous, what it finds important and how through it all most people seem to only see the dollar signs at the end of the day. [EXCLUSIVE] V.V. Brown: Tough Like Glue (Live at DC9) Posted: 07 Nov 2011 08:52 AM PST Click here to view the embedded video. The absolutely incredible V.V. Brown paid D.C. a visit this past weekend and performed to a packed house at DC9 Friday night. The intimate set was chocked full of tracks from her new album Lollipops & Politics and one very awesome cover of the Michael Jackson classic ‘Rock With You‘. Of all the new tracks V.V. performed my hands down favorite was ‘Tough Like Glue’. Infectious and energetic track with a powerful message delivered by V.V.’s even more powerful vocals. You can have your chance to see V.V. live at one of her remaining tour dates on the West Coast. We were very lucky to get the chance to sit down with V.V. Brown herself before the show and had the chance to talk about the creation of her new album, musical inspiration and Marmite. Check back for the interview shortly. V.V. BROWN TOUR DATES |
Live in the Vineyard: ZZ Ward @ Duckhorn Vineyards Posted: 06 Nov 2011 05:48 PM PST Next stop on my Live in the Vineyard tour was at the Duckhorn Vineyards, known for crafting classic Bordeaux varietals from the Napa Valley for nearly 30 years. Duckhorn was one of the first wineries to pioneer Merlot as a premium varietal and now makes several elegant Merlot and distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings to showcase the characteristics of its various vineyard sites, as well as a full-flavored Sauvignon Blanc. Speaking of full-flavored…Meet Hollywood Records' most exciting new signing, ZZ Ward, who performed at Duckhorn today. A singer/songwriter whose artistry spins on a luminous axis of voice and soul, ZZ is an artist in whose work bluesy southern rock & dirty beats collide. It’s rumored her debut album "Til the Casket Drop" is due out this fall, and I, for one, can’t wait. She and her music are just incredible. As she took at the stage (a wine tasting bar turned performance platform provided the intimacy Live in the Vineyard is known for), ZZ announced her first song would be the title track off her upcoming LP, and that it stood for “Going to war about someone you love.” That was part one of two of my falling for her. Part two is her voice. It’s not white picket fences, but rather sounds like it’s taken seasons of weather to distress and wear down her chords to perfection. It’s “go time” without the need or desire to sit pretty. Instead, ZZ’s voice compliments her smoky, shimmering glare, her eyes so knowingly staring into you and providing a compelling, scintillating performance. And it’s okay to admit what gritty thoughts stir, because she not only gets it, she’s written a song about it. ZZ Ward was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Oregon, in a small town called Roseburg. She grew up listening to her Dad write and sing the blues and started performing with him in his blues band as a kid. She fell in love with the sincerity of Etta, the soul of Muddy and the power of Big Mama. And all of this background was put to good use when she got older and started writing hooks for and performing with local rappers from Eugene, falling in love with hip-hop, with it’s authenticity. Now she’s married both, and the music world is all the better for it. Much better, and so am I. #DirtyShine ZZ Ward Official This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Live in the Vineyard: SafetySuit & Christina Perri @ Uptown Theatre Posted: 06 Nov 2011 04:20 PM PST The standout act from last night’s Live in the Vineyard showcase at the Uptown Theatre was definitely SafetySuit. I have never been as swept up in a band the first time I heard them. During their introduction, lead singer Doug Brown said, “You may not know who we are, but all you need to know is that we’re going to have a good time!” They managed to be sweet, tough, hard hitting and interactive with the audience during and between songs. They have a perfect mix of effective lyrics, tasteful musicianship, well-crafted songs…and just enough poppiness to ensure them mainstream success. I may not have known them coming up, but mid-performance I was sure not to forget them. Visit their official website here, to see what all my fuss is about. MP3: Get Around This by SafteySuit Lastly, Christina Perri closed out the night. Perri isn’t for listeners looking for unfeeling, complex mechanics and/or politics in their music. Instead, she focuses her lyrics on pure feeling, pulling together a performance each time that is touching and heartfelt in its fluidity and melodic expression. That she achieves this feat without having to resort to tricks of artificial or technical complexity only further testifies to her commitment to her genre–one reflected in the well-earned devotion of her fans. The audience was also treated to a performance of Perri’s contribution to the upcoming Twilight Saga:

Live in the Vineyard: Rebecca Pidgeon & Patrick Stump @ Uptown Theatre Posted: 06 Nov 2011 11:49 AM PST The Uptown Theatre is downtown Napa's ideal venue for live entertainment. Nestled in the famed West End district, this stunningly restored art deco masterpiece showcases only the finest acts offering a phenomenal and intimate experience. There is no bad seat in the house – and in true "Live in the Vineyard" fashion, I was blown away and impressed with both the talent and the energy each artist put into the evening's showcase of musicians. First up, Rebecca Pidgeon. With vocals full of grace, verve and well nuanced phrasing, even the most skeptical critics will acknowledge that Pidgeon has all the makings of a great vocal stylist. The most intriguing part of her performance was her ability to take her deeply rooted Celtic influences and blend them with the best elements of old school jazz to create her own unique musical signature. Click here to visit her official website and for a free download of “Get Up Get Out” off her upcoming LP Slingshot. Following Pidgeon was Patrick Stump, best-known as the main creative force behind '00s pop-punk standard-bearers Fall Out Boy. However, at Live in the Vineyard, he took a different turn, focusing on his R&B and hip-hop influences (long a part of his music). These sounds come to the foreground on his upcoming album, Soul Punk, an album that reflects his multi-hyphenate career as singer-songwriter, composer, record producer, music critic, actor, filmmaker. Whatever anyone might think of Stump’s music, you must acknowledge his drive, ambition, and commitment, flying into SFO from New Jersey exclusively for this wine-accented performance. And his music didn’t disappoint those gathered: Patrick and his acoustic guitar filled every inch of the room in a performance of songs that themselves had no acoustic guitar with their original recordings–demonstrating not only the artist’s originality but his skill and deft musical hand.
